From farm life to locksmithing
My name is Stephen Fretwell, and this is the story of how I became a locksmith.
I grew up on a farm near Barnsley, with my family later moving their farming business across into North Lincolnshire. Leaving school at 16, I went straight into working on the farm full-time — early mornings, long days, and constantly finding practical ways to solve problems.
Looking back now, those years taught me far more than I realised at the time. I was always curious about how things worked. My dad would probably describe it as “messing about” or “taking things apart for no reason,” but I was fascinated by fixing and improving things. I still remember stripping down two old bikes to build a quicker one from the best parts.
Farm work also taught me the importance of reliability and quick thinking. When the weather changed, jobs had to be finished fast, and machinery breakdowns were never convenient. I had a habit of pushing equipment hard — and if something broke, my dad’s attitude was simple: if you caused the problem, you fixed it yourself.
That hands-on upbringing gave me a real understanding of mechanics, problem-solving, and patience. Without knowing it at the time, those years spent repairing machinery, tools, and equipment were laying the foundations for the locksmith work I do today. Every day as a locksmith still involves diagnosing faults, understanding how systems work, and finding the right repair — skills that started years ago on the farm.

Finding my way into locksmithing
In my late thirties, life changed direction, and I found myself looking for a completely new career path. While exploring different options, I came across the locksmith industry, and something about it immediately clicked with me. Like many people entering the trade at that time, I initially joined a locksmith franchise. Franchises were very popular then and seemed like a good way to gain experience, training, and support whilst learning the industry. However, after about 18 months, I decided to branch out and start my own locksmith business.
Although the franchise provided my initial training, I sought to improve my skills and learn from experienced professionals in the trade. That was when I had a real stroke of luck and met Bennie Wells, a highly respected locksmith known throughout the industry for his knowledge and training. I was fortunate enough to spend time training one-to-one with him, and that experience completely changed my outlook on locksmithing. It gave me a much deeper understanding of the trade and confirmed that this was exactly what I wanted to do in the long term.

What I enjoy most about locksmithing is that no two days are ever the same. Every job is different, every lock works differently, and even now, I am still learning new things all the time. It’s a trade where experience genuinely matters.
I am DBS checked, fully accredited, and committed to providing a professional, honest, and trustworthy locksmith service. I believe customers should feel confident about who they invite into their home or business, and those standards remain important to me today.

Life as a professional locksmith
People are often surprised by what locksmithing actually involves. Most assume the job is mainly about lost keys and emergency lockouts, but in reality, that is only a small part of the work I carry out each week.
A large percentage of my work involves repairing and servicing uPVC and composite doors, replacing failed multipoint locking systems, upgrading security, fixing window locks and handles, changing mortice locks, securing garages and sheds, fitting code locks, and helping customers after break-ins or security concerns. Every day brings different challenges, which is one of the reasons I still enjoy the job so much after all these years.
Choosing locksmithing as a career is something I have never regretted. It is a trade that combines practical skills, problem-solving, and customer service — all things I genuinely enjoy. Hopefully, it keeps me busy for many more years yet.
