Patio door repairs… fix, don’t replace
Stephen Fretwell has extensive experience repairing all types of patio door repairs in the Isle of Axholme. I believe in repairing rather than replacing wherever possible, helping customers save money while keeping their existing patio doors secure and working properly.
As an interesting fact, the word “patio” comes from Spanish and traditionally refers to an outdoor courtyard or rear garden area.
Will I need a new patio door?
In most cases, absolutely not. I repair patio doors using high-quality, genuine, and like-for-like replacement parts. This helps customers save hundreds compared to installing new doors.
My fully equipped mobile workshop has a wide range of mechanisms, cylinders, handles, and replacement parts. This means I can finish repairs on the first visit. A full two-year guarantee backs all repairs for added peace of mind.
Types of patio doors that can be repaired
The term “patio doors” now covers a wide range of door styles. Traditionally, it referred to sliding doors leading onto a garden or patio area, but today it is commonly used to describe:
Common patio door problems
If your patio door will not open, lock or unlock properly, do not panic. This is a very common issue we encounter regularly. The most common causes include:
- A failed gearbox inside the multipoint locking mechanism
- Door alignment issues are causing excessive strain on the lock
- Handles have become difficult to operate over time
- A failed euro cylinder is preventing the key from turning correctly
Most patio door locking mechanisms have an average lifespan of around 10 years before wear and tear begin to cause problems. Continued pressure while forcing the door to lock can eventually cause the mechanism to fail early.

2. My patio door won’t lock
A patio door that won’t lock properly is often due to a broken locking mechanism or the door being misaligned over time. A simple test is to try operating the handle while the door is open. If the mechanism works well in the open position, the issue is likely due to alignment rather than a total lock failure. Either way, I am here to resolve the problem
3. Broken patio door handle
If the handle is loose, has snapped and is detached from the door, we can usually replace it quickly and easily. We stock a wide range of quality replacement handles suitable for most patio door systems.
If the handle spins or feels loose but remains attached, the issue is likely a faulty gearbox or a multipoint locking mechanism inside the door.
4. My door key will not turn
Some modern patio doors are fitted with high-security euro cylinder locks. These provide great security, but they can get stiff or fail over time due to wear, dirt, or lock issues.
If your key won’t turn or the lock is stuck, I can replace the cylinder. This will get your door working again.
5. Draughts coming through the patio door
If your patio door misaligns or drops, gaps may form around the frame. This can lead to draughts, heat loss, and difficulties with locking the door.
I can realign and adjust the door to improve operation, security, and weather sealing.
Patio door hinge adjustments
Yes, this is something I do regularly. Patio doors come fitted with many types of hinges. If the adjustments are wrong, it can make the problem worse. I have the right tools and experience to adjust your door. This will restore smooth operation without causing damage or needing replacement parts.

Can old aluminium sliding patio doors be repaired?
Older aluminium sliding patio doors can sometimes be more challenging to repair, mainly because many original parts and locking systems are now obsolete. However, depending on the fault, repairs and security improvements are still often possible.
Additional patio door security locks can usually be fitted to enhance security and stability, particularly on older sliding systems where the original locking parts are no longer available.
One issue that is often uneconomical to repair is badly worn sliding tracks or runners. If the track itself has significantly deteriorated, replacing the patio door may sometimes become the most practical long-term solution.
